Edge Computing is a new distributed computing paradigm that brings computation and data storage closer to the sources of data. Sounds familiar? You are right! The principle is remarkably similar to Ocean Protocol’s data access mechanism Compute-to-Data (CtD). deltaDAO has been using CtD in Pontus-X, a Gaia-X Web3 ecosystem built by deltaDAO and powered by Polygon, W3C and Gaia-X specifications and Ocean Protocol, since the very beginning. As one of the cornerstones for data sovereignty, privacy, and compliance, CtD empowers data owners to grant compute-only access to their data without having to create copies in other environments they do not control. To take full advantage of edge computing, such as improved response times and bandwidth saving, we have combined the paradigm with CtD, forming Compute-to-Edge.

Compute-to-Edge completes the edge-to-cloud continuum.
In short terms, Compute-to-Edge (CtE) allows analytics to be brought to the edge. This means, using CtE, collected data can stay on any edge device controlled or selected by the data owner. Just like using CtD, whitelisted algorithms are brought to the data, so privacy-preserving compute jobs can take place in the data owners’ edge environment. As a result, the data footprint is reduced, as unnecessary replication, transport, and storage of data are being avoided. CtE opens new doors for data usage and monetization of data across companies and industries with vast benefits in terms of compliance, cost savings, and data control.

Road damage detection — a CtE mobility use case
The compute-to-Edge integration, developed by deltaDAO AG, has also been applied to a use case of the Gaia-X 4 Future Mobility project moveID, a mobility consortium consisting of 19 companies and institutions and led by Robert Bosch GmbH. Together with the other members we create an open-source, resilient, and decentralized digital identity and data infrastructure for mobility applications, based on Web3 technologies.

“Giving back control to users is key to ethical data usage and acceptance in smart mobility ecosystems. The future of mobility is about Self-Sovereign Identity, technical data sovereignty and sustainable, ethical use of data. It will empower people to retain control over their own data and make mobility safer, more convenient, and more efficient for everybody.” — says Kai Meinke, Co-Founder and Business Lead of deltaDAO.

To make the advantages of CtE comprehensible and tangible, deltaDAO brought a road damage detection mobility use case to Pontus-X, a platform to find, publish, and consume service offerings in the Gaia-X Test Network. When consuming the road damage detection data service offerings consisting in a data set and a whitelisted algorithm, consumers gain location data of potential potholes. The road damage detection use case demonstrates how algorithm and data providers can train and monetize their machine learning scripts by making them available in Gaia-X. At the same time consumers in Gaia-X can use existing and well-trained models for classification, analysis and forecasting without the need to share their data and/or acquire personnel or expensive services. The product can be used directly from the marketplace.

Enabling federated analytics on a fleet of edge devices.

Just like it has been drafted by deltaDAO, anyone could collect and store any data on any edge device and afterwards publish it as a data service offering on the Pontus-X Federated Catalogue, described through Gaia-X compliant Self-Descriptions. In fact, CtE is also applicable on a fleet of edge devices enabling federated analytics across borders. To showcase how this could look like in practice, deltaDAO mocked a dashboard, called cetoDash and brought it together with our edge device cetomini to the deltaDAO company car.

Via the dashboard you can view aggregated results of compute jobs. As an example, we visualized our pothole location data on a map, as can be seen in the image above. Moreover, business insights generated out of the collected data can be shared and monetized using the dashboard as well. Furthermore, edge devices, in our case different vehicles, can be managed and tracked in the control panel.

deltaDAO and Polygon become infrastructure partners
To ensure non-discriminatory access to identity services and data spaces that are not owned by any single company, deltaDAO has partnered with the decentralized blockchain scaling platform specialist Polygon.

“We’re thrilled to become deltaDAO’s infrastructure partner in its mission to provide an open and federated data economy for the European digital ecosystem,” said Antoni Martin, Co-founder, Polygon. “By leveraging Polygon Supernets and Polygon ID, Gaia-X will reap all the benefits offered by Web3 in a modular and seamless manner, allowing them to deploy projects that fully adhere to the core principles of decentralization while preserving privacy and championing sustainability.”

The Gaia-X Web3 Ecosystem will leverage Polygon Supernets, to scale an open, secure, and compliant federated digital ecosystem and identity framework for businesses building towards Gaia-X.

With our partners we are looking forward to building towards an open, decentralized, trustless, and privacy-preserving data ecosystem with Gaia-X compliance at its core.
